I nearly always work figuratively, partly out of love for the human form, but mostly because of the added dimension that is created when the viewer decides how the figure thinks and feels. Often my work is about movement. And most often it’s about dancing and rendered in the printmaking mediums, I find that working plate has much in common with dancing with a partner. Whether it’s a monotype plate, an etching plate or a woodblock, there is a dynamic between the plate and the printmaker. A conversation, so to speak, the artist says something on the plate with ink and runs it through the press. The plate says something back, and it is not always the expected answer. This response may come from the plate’s inherent qualities or it may be the artist’s inner conscious speaking. Whatever it is, it’s definitely another voice speaking and you respond to it. When the process is flowing it’s like the dance where the lead’s invitation to respond is so open-handed and the follower’s reaction is so suggestive of the next move that it’s impossible to distinguish who is suggesting and who is responding. In printmaking as well as dance, this happens best when control is relinquished.
